An independent commercial broker showed us a chart that scared them: organic traffic down 34% year over year, while quote requests were roughly flat. Their instinct was that their rankings had collapsed. What had actually happened was narrower and more interesting. The informational queries — what does general liability cover, do I need workers comp for one employee — were being answered directly by AI summaries and no longer sending clicks. The transactional queries still converted. They had lost the top of the funnel to the answer engines.

Losing Informational Clicks Is Not the Real Threat

Those clicks were never worth much individually. The genuine risk is that the answer engine explains the whole coverage question, recommends a course of action, and names a carrier or a national marketplace — and the local broker who could actually structure the policy is absent from the answer entirely. That is not a traffic problem, it is being removed from the consideration set before it forms.

So the goal shifts. Instead of competing for the click, you compete to be the source the answer is built from and the name it mentions. We started measuring citation share for the broker above — how often they appeared in AI answers for their coverage areas and region — and it was zero across every query we tested.

What Actually Gets a Broker Cited

Answer engines assessing insurance content weigh verifiable expertise heavily, because the topic is regulated and consequential. In practice that means the licensed agent is named on the page with their license number, the jurisdiction is explicit, the content is dated and reviewed, and the writing addresses real specificity rather than generic definitions. A page defining general liability in the abstract is competing with a thousand identical pages and gets cited by none.

Business-Type Pages Are the Unclaimed Ground

The queries that still convert and are still winnable are narrow: insurance for a food truck, coverage a general contractor needs to bid municipal work, professional liability for an independent therapist. Each combines a business type with a real constraint, and each is a page a national marketplace will never write because it does not scale. That is exactly why an independent broker can own it.

We built nineteen business-type pages for the broker, each written from their own book of business — the actual coverage those clients carry, the actual limits their contracts require, the claims they have seen. Nine months later they were appearing in AI answers for the majority of those business types in their region, and quote requests were up 51% while informational traffic continued to decline. The two numbers finally decoupled.

You are no longer competing for the click. You are competing to be the sentence the answer engine writes about your market — and to be named in it.

The Quote Request Has to Be Worth Starting

Insurance quote forms are notoriously hostile — twenty fields before anyone has explained anything. If a visitor arrives having already had the concept explained by an AI summary, they arrive further along and less patient. The form should reflect that: enough to start a real conversation, and nothing more. We cut the broker's intake to five fields plus a WhatsApp option and completion rate roughly doubled.

The follow-up matters as much. A commercial insurance decision often waits for a renewal date, so capturing that date and scheduling against it converts far better than pushing for a quote today. Most of this broker's wins now come from inquiries first captured six to eleven months earlier.

Track Citation Share, Not Just Rankings

  1. Test your core coverage questions in the major AI engines and record whether you appear at all
  2. Add licensed agent names, license numbers, and jurisdiction to every coverage page
  3. Build business-type pages from your own book — real limits, real contract requirements, real claims
  4. Cut the quote form to five fields and add a WhatsApp option
  5. Capture renewal dates and schedule follow-up against them; report citation share monthly alongside rankings
